My current workbench is a bit of a sit up and beg affair that has changed radically over the years as I’ve adapted it to suit my needs. One thing that bugs me is the height. I built the bench for prop building and the lower heigh was a benefit when casting and sculpting but as I moved more and more firmly into wood working, I wanted a bench with more height. I did manage to prop up my bench by a couple of inches but this introduced racking. I’ve decided that enough is enough; I need to build myself a decent bench.
I went out and purchased my first stack of timber (Christmas present money). I was only able to get enough to make the actual worktop but I figured that was enough to be going on with.
Here it is all stacked up waiting for work to start.

I got to work and cut each of the boards down to 6’1″ in length to allow for a 1/2″ trim at both ends later on. Here’s the main worktop clamped up after gluing.

Week 2 –
I was able to go and buy some more timber so off I went to B&Q to buy enough for the two aprons. All the above was repeated and I soon had the aprons glued up.
Here’s all the parts made so far stacked up.(Eddy – those clamps did get in the way a bit but they work so well they’re all I’ve needed really. I am going to be buying some shorter ones soon (the sort Paul uses). The green Dakota ones in the shot are frankly rubbish.)
Next up – Legs…

28 January 2014 at 11:00 am #26720Wow, lol, now I feel kinda stupid. That is pretty cool, I have a lot of friends that have been telling me for several years how good that show is and that I should be watching it. I think I watched two episodes and never got back to it.
Is this a hobby for you Jon, or do you make them for the actual show?

Hi Steve, I built the Dalek because I’d always wanted one. For some reason he got called ‘Nimrod’ and I now use him to help raise money for charity. I’m not connected to the show at all alas. When I’m at events with my Dalek, people ask if it’s one from the show and I always say that he failed the audition – I love the puzzled look on peoples faces as they walk away and realise what I just said 😀
David, your not wrong about the workout – I even had to wear a sweatband to stop myself from dripping over the wood. I slept very well that night I can tell you.
