Nate,
I have the Veritas dovetail saw and love it. For $65 you can’t go wrong. I had to stone some set off it, put some wax on it, and it cuts like a dream. I imagine LV’s carcasse and big Reagan 16″ tenon saw are similar for not a lot of money. The carcasse saws don’t have a lot of depth of cut to them, though.
If you have a little extra scratch, I’d recommend buying Lie Nielsen’s 14″ rip tenon saw for $165. In a pinch you could just get this saw and it will get you through a lot of cutting, even dovetails (at 10 tpi the dovetails will be a little rough, though), until you can buy some more saws.
LN’s 14″ tenon saw (or the 16″) and LV’s dovetail saw together would get you far if you want brand new saws you don’t have to fiddle with to get right, or wonder whether they are right to begin with.
Veritas Saws are a little more expensive here in Australia, at about AU$90, but still well worth the money. I got the Veritas Carcass Saw with rip teeth, it’s the only thing I’ve used since really. I ran into some problems with depth of cut making my workbench tenons, but other than that they’re fantastic. If you can restore a saw to work better than that, then you should be plenty happy.
