For a few weeks, I’ve been spending time building my workbench, my previous make do from spare osb and plywood top on plastic trestles simple wouldn’t do. I’ve opted, like many of you, to follow Paul Seller’s workbench design – I’ve included some pictures of the progress to date.
I’m close to finishing with just the well board and vice to fit. 🙂 But my attention has turned to how to finish the bench. Initially, I thought I would leave it unfinished which would be the easiest and simplest. However, I’m concerned about how the wood may be effected by the environment and particularly the humidity.
I think there are 3 additional options: 1) Oil; 2) Wax and 3) paint. I suppose I could shellac or use a sanding sealer. What have other people used and what would you recommend?

To be honest this design even though typically English/European isn’t my favourite mainly beccause of the apron. In my bench I have an apron and I’ve alway found it to be a pain when I want to clamp a dovetail vice or anything else. Yes it’s good for edge jointing but other than that they are just too darn inconvenient. Am I wrong, give me some pointers.
Hello Kevin, under the topic of ‘finishing’ there is a recent thread on this topic as well, and yes all three of your options are good ones, and it appears you did a fine job so far. (Your bench is very similar to mine with two different size tops). I chose Danish oil for mine.
27 August 2014 at 1:52 pm #62994You apply Danish oil to stained timber or timber with a nice grain to pop, this is pine and the oil would do very little in appearance.and protection. I wouldn’t stain it either especially any dark colours if i were you I would hit it with plain old shellac.
