Any suggestions on a beginners tool box project. I am a beginning woodworker and starting to collect my tools. I am primarily restoring old tools and want to have single box to store my collection properly. I am still acquiring techniques and skills and the toolbox in Pauls video series is a little beyond what I can currently do well.
Appreciate the suggestions.
22 November 2015 at 12:03 am #132585Hello Baldemar,
My two cents would be not to worry too much about what kind of tool box right now. But since you asked specifically about a project I’m making a simple saw till and Paul has a tool cabinet coming in a few weeks that looks pretty interesting.

22 November 2015 at 5:31 pm #132592You may want to look at building a dutch tool chest. It’s a much easier build that some of the others and lends itself to enhancement as time goes on. Here’s my original build:

Here is the current incarnation:

Is there a particular set of plans you used?
23 November 2015 at 3:11 am #132608Mine was based on an article in Popular Woodworking from October 2013. There were two versions, a smaller one and a taller version. Mine is the large version, although I made mine 3 inches wider so my saws would fit. There is also a Woodwright’s Shop episode about it which might give you some insight.
The reason I built this box was that it was much less intimidating for someone with my limited skills and confidence. I could probably make something more complex now, but this box fits my needs very well.

28 November 2015 at 2:44 pm #132745If your still interested in building one I can draw one up for you that will be easy to build with drawers that are not complicated. It would be to your skill level giving you a sound knowledge in basic construction.
Let me know if your interested.

Thank you for your kind offer. I would be a fool not to accept. Your drawings would help get me out of the slippery slope of tool acquisition and restoration and starting to work wood by hand.
29 November 2015 at 5:23 pm #132758I found a sketchup model of the large chest:

Also here is the link to the Chris Schwarz blog post on the article.

29 November 2015 at 10:04 pm #132760That’s a good tool project it’s not difficult to build.
I’m still drawing it for you
29 November 2015 at 11:48 pm #132761I’m in the final stages and will continue with it tonight, just be please be patient with me.
1 December 2015 at 1:00 am #132778Salko, your doing me a huge favor. It will be done when it’s done. I,m in no rush.
Thank you
1 December 2015 at 2:25 am #132786Thanks Baldemar I’ve done a few trying to work out what would suit your beginning stage and I’ve finally settled on one. All I’m doing now is working out the measurements trying and making sure it all fits, I’m basically creating an ideal world for you which in reality plans are never dead accurate but mine well have to be. This tool box will have 3 sliding drawers and a large tray at the top, the joinery is dead simple yet it I’m hoping at your level it will provide some challenge. After all without challenges one can never excel and learn. Also it should last you a life time but more on that when I finish it.
btw thanks for taking the pressure off of me I just hope when I’m done it will suffice. I may do a video tutorial on it in the future.
2 December 2015 at 4:36 pm #132819Here’s what I’ve come up with all I need to do now is fix up one small detail in the initial drawing, I didn’t include the handle in this model it’s time consuming to do and I haven’t worked with 3d for the last 5 years and have become very rusty with it. So the handles goes on the side of the box and I would put a chain on the lid I meant to say two chains to stop it from breaking out your hinges. This box is very straight forward you shouldn’t have any issues in the build but in case you do this is a very friendly forum so just ask.
I’ll post the drawings up next week if I can do it sooner I will.

I’ll be adding to my list of arsenals Inventor pro which is also by autodesk the one I’m using now is 3ds max but this is mainly for studio work and film but Inventor is an engineering software which will be perfect for woodworking as I can easily use cad and then model precisely to my dimensions which means saving money on materials for mock up.
Anyway I wanted to demonstrate the power of photo realistic renderings, the previous renders I am not happy with and I would never do such awful renders like that in the past but just look at the teapot how gorgeous it came up. Sorry to have bored you with this but I just couldn’t help myself. I used to have a website until recently for the last 10 years teaching this stuff online it was then called cgexperience. I had once universities referring their students to my site as a resource learning centre. Oh well nothing beats woodworking though.
