Hello everyone,
I have only recently started hand tool woodworking, been at it for about four months now. Sawing I have no issues with hand cramping but when chopping mortises or cleaning out the waste in dovetails with a chisel I get an incredible amount of cramping in my hand holding the chisel.
I’ve been working construction for 19 years now and have put quite the beating on my hands over the years. My question is, is cramping an issue for most just getting started, is it the way I’m holding the chisel or is it the years of abuse my hands gave taken? Any info would be helpful, thanks22 June 2019 at 1:06 pm #583423I have had the same problem. I found that it was a Chiropractic problem for me. When the nerves in my back where pinched. The the small delicate movements with the chisel can cause your hands to cramp. Also check and make sure you are not having a death grip on your chisel.
I hope this helps
12 July 2019 at 5:14 am #589321Howdy, Dave! I share both the hand cramping problem (and the same surname). I have arthritis in my hands, shoulders, feet and most other joints. I blame the cramping on ‘arther’ and being past 75yo.
