Looks to me it is surface mounted and recesses like a hinge. Recess the flange and point the lock bolt to the lip of the door or case. It looks like it only works on swinging doors

You don’t mention whether you want a sliding or hinged lid. For a hinged lid you would need to have the deadbolt lock you suggested on the moving part (locking bolt moves straight out of the lockbody). Alternatively you could find a lock with a hook bolt, the lock then sits on the inactive part and the bolt rotates to hooks a hinged part preventing it from moving away.
You also get rim mounted and mortice locks. Rim mounted being fixed onto a surface, and mortice locks – well – fixed into a mortice.
You could also use a hooked cam lock which is simple and cheap.
