I just added some leather pieces to my vise jaws. Previously I had lined the jaws with oak, but the work pieces kept sliding could not get a firm hold without having to tighten the vise frequently. Now that I glued some leather off cuts the oak the vise is working perfectly. Plus on soft wood I get better protection for the wood.

That’s exactly what I did on my jaws too. Very effective.

It’s on my list when I get back going too. How thick were you able to find leather?

Workshop Heaven (UK) has some very nice leather for workshop stuff and it’s reasonably priced. Here’s the URL:

Another suggestion for getting leather: I got some from my local cobbler/shoe repair shop. They always have some lying around for shoe repairs. Perhaps this would work where you are as well?

I purchased mine from Tandy leather, type that in they should come up got a piece that was 8 1/2 x 16 inches which was enough for my vise. I think I paid like $12.00 US

I just picked up a 3 pound bag of leather off cuts at Hobby Lobby for less than $10. It contained several pieces of good heavy leather of different colors and sizes. Look carefully at the bag you are buying to make sure you are getting more larger pieces rather than long thin strips. Well worth the cost of buying a single piece at a leather supplier.

When I see posts like this I realise how lucky I am that my sisters partner is a saddler. When I need some leather off cuts I just have to take him to the pub for a pint. 😀

Keep Calm and have a Cup of Tea
