Thanks all! I think I’m making my pins to tight, in fear of gaps, because I cannot get the tails to bottom out in the pins, leaving a slight gap. Also I have a slight bow (concave) over the length of the top and bottom of the pin boards. I need to disassemble everything and prepare for glue up, so I might try to pare a tiny amount from the pins..
As far as meranti, i don’t mind the lumber, itself. However, I think it is an irritant to my sinuses. I used a power planner and I think the dust clogged my nose and had an awful headache. That was even after wearing a dust mask.. Other than that, it’s fine lumber.
Mark, how will you finish meranti? I think I’m going to dye, seal, fill the grain, stain and then apply a top coat..
If want to make it more uniform a little stain would not hurt. Then I would go shellack route.
On my mini table going leave wood as it is the top rails pinker in colour the legs redder and bottom rails browner. The top will be mahogany which is reddish in colour.
Just me I quite like the variations.
When I made the odd door frame etc. I always use Sadolin or Sikins stain finish good making same colour and for exterior use.
I disassembled the box, before gluing up, anddecided the pins were not too tight. I cleaned up the inside corners and used clamping pressure to close any gaps.
For the finish, I decided to go bold with the stain, and stained it almost black. The to coat will be a wipe on poly to imitate a hand rubbed finish. Then I just need to put felt on the inside.
