First attempt at chronicling one of my builds. This will be small jewelry box for my brother’s girlfriend. It will be, what I hope, a simple yet elegant dovetailed keepsake box, made from African mahogany. Here are the beginnings.
Also a first, I will be milling this lumber to 3/8″, currently its 1/2″. I haven’t made a box this thin before…. And, I will be attempting a more difficult multi-step finish.
Overall dimensions, 11 1/2 x 5 3/4 x 2 3/8″.
Panel is glued for the lid, but needs to be ripped to rough width, the base lumber ripped to width. Next step, final thicknessing and cutting to final size. Then joinery.
Side note, and for honesty’sake, I machined the lumber to rough dimensions, hand tools will take over from here.
Enjoy,

While I go over all the surfaces with a hand plane to remove the mill marks I will use my table saw and chop saw to do the ruff work and focus more on the joinery for the hand work. I just finished a smalljewelry box for my sister. Keep posting the progress I’d love to see your design.

So everything done by hand.
There is something about a trinket jewellery box magical. I would like to make more in future.
Love your box Sandy and look to see a curvashus box from you Dan . 😉Very beautiful, Sandy! At first I had grand ideas on this jewelry box,but before I bit off more than I could chew, I scaled it back a lot. Bigger is sometimes better, but this will be beautiful, nonetheless.
Mark my work space is very small as well, so the table saw says tucked away in the corner of the shop. I only bring it out when I’m going through a lot of repeat cuts.
Here is a sample of my finish I will be using. Except I will use Greg’s polissor method, he talks so much about, to smooth out the surface.

You must be logged in to view attached files.I bought what I thought was African mahogany. When I saw your sofa table project, it is why I thought you were making it out of mahogany.. I think the piece of lumber I have isn’t top grade. Here is another piece of mahogany I have, with a gray spot, alongside the piece I’m ousting to make the jewelery box and the finished sample

A lot of Meranti is quite light weight compared to proper Mahogany Also Meranti far cheaper. If you tap Mahogany how can I say it has a bit of a ring to it. Tap some Meranti and it sounds a bit deader especially the pinker looking stuff. The redder and browner stuff are usually a bit more dense so can have that ring to it.
Everything you described, describes this wood.. I will have to chalk it up to a learning experience. As far as labeling and cost, all I remember thinking, when I was buying this, is that this is really cheap mahogany. So I don’t think I was over charged… Eitherway, I think it will turn out nice once finished…
22 May 2014 at 12:05 pm #57401In the end wood is wood and you are the craft person.
I’m sure box will turn out nice.
Meranti is quite pleasing for cheap cost.
I used Meranti on my mini sofa table because it was what I had to hand and was easier for me dimension by hand without a lot of waste.
One problem you do have is that it marks up quite easily. Easy to put a little ding in it.
Enough of me rambling on can’t wait to see how. You proceed with your box Dan. 😉I work third shift so my circadian cycle can be all screwed up. I was hoping to get more work when I got home this morning, but crashed hard. However I did get a lot done when I woke up… Dovetails and grooves completed. It was nice pulling out the record 43! I did stop grooves in the tail pieces with a chisel.

I would be lost without my 043.

Any thought on Meranti? -
