I’m totally immersing myself into this endeavor. I have the complete dvd and book series. I’ve been watching and reading trying to get set up to do this right. I’ve been on a mission buying tools on ebay and the net. I’ve purchased Stanley no. 3,4,5, and 7. All of them from before WWI and before WWII. I have Distton rip and crosscut saws a well as a tennon saw and dovetail saw all from 1880’s to WWI. Got the diamond stones and proper files to keep the saws going. Stanley no.80 and 151M spokeshave. I also bought a no. 12 scraper plane. I’ve had no trouble sharpening the planes and the scrapers save for the no. 12. I’m not sure if it needs a hook on it or with a sharp like the plane. Right now I’m just practicing and getting more experience with the tools. Anyone know about the no.12? Appreciate the help.
Since its job is to scrape like a no.80 I tried it both ways and have not been successful. It is a beautiful looking tool and the rosewood totes on it are outstanding so based on that alone it’s worth keeping at it till it works. Thank you for the welcome. I’ll try and post up pictures later.
29 March 2014 at 3:04 pm #39086Welcome Mike! Like Dave, I don’t have a No. 12 scraper plane either, but I do have an 80 that works really well. Glad to have you with us here, enjoy the fellowship and have some fun!
Mike,
I don’t have one of the No. 12’s, but I think it’s sharpened and oriented the same as the No. 80.
Here’s a link to more specific information.
