I’ve been making a couple of toolboxes for my tools which I plan to ship to another state–since my new project will require my physical presence in the jobsite.
Couple of things I’ve modified–or should I say, changed the plans because of bad planning with the hardware–and would like to bring to your attention.
When I was making the box I didn’t follow master Sellers drawings and I was just going off of what I have in mind. After making the tills I noticed that I made a mistake and didn’t account for the hinge knuckles thickness, so I had to alter the main box lid hinging a little.
Instead of having the hinges on the side of the box, I’ve placed them on the top–that’s where I did the necessary “cheating” to allow a space for the hinges of the internal box (till)
There was also a slight issue with the internal tills–I had to make them slightly large (about a 1/16″) from the opening, then plane it down to fit precisely. I also noticed that a slight gap between the runways of the tills can be a huge issue if you want to push the tills from the sides and not from the centre. But then I figured out another trick, that is, “rounding” the box sides prevents most of the catch of the corners of the box and the runways.
Right now I’m waiting on the chain for the lid and the handles. I may turn a handle on the lathe–but right now I’m also working on a different project, so I may just purchase one—any recommendation on handles is appreciated!
Right now I can’t think of any other issues to bring it up–but once they come up I will keep posted.
Cheers

Since I had to put the hinges on top, I made the lid stiles 3″ wide on the front, 1-½” on the back (hinge side) where it meets the body hinges that are attached to a 1-½” wide hinge rail.
I was hoping to create a vision of 3″ stiles once the lid is closed. I can clearly see that hinge knuckles are obstructing my eye—anyone else sees it that way?
