In viewing a number of different videos on sharpening, I swear there was one where Paul constructed a guide to clamp to a chisel or plane iron as a training aid for freehand honing. I can;t seem to find the video anymore. Does anyone know which video I’m referring to and if so, can you share the link?
No, but you could easily cut a couple of triangular pieces of wood with 25 and 30 degree angles and use them for assistance. Granted, if your stones are wet the wood will get wet but it might serve as a cheap/simple training aid.
Get a piece of wood, draw a straight line, use a protractor to measure the desired angle and draw a line along that angle. Connect the two lines and cut it out with the saw of your choosing. If you have a plane that is already sharp you can plane down to your lines for accuracy. If you like you can put the 25 and 30 degree angles on the same piece of wood (the third angle would be a 125 degree angle). Just make sure to mark on the wood which angle is which.
Thats the one where sharpens a spokeshave. They are short and hard to hold on to
