I have a Stanley number four plane that I have to move the lateral adjustment all the way to the right side to get an even shaving. The cutting edge appears to be square when I check it with a square. I’ve gone through Paul’s restoration video and tuned the plane up. The lateral adjuster is not loose and doesn’t appear to be bent. The plane works just fine. But I’m afraid I’m eventually gonna run out of lateral adjustment. I could correct this by sharpening the blade out of square. Something must be out of whack but I can’t figure out what it is. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks14 September 2020 at 4:46 am #678028Sounds like the frog needs to be centered parallel to the front of the Mouth.
Loosen the screws and turn in the direction counter to the error.
In your case, that would be clockwise. Then tighten the screws back up.

Hi,
One other thing to check: the feet on the frog could be out of parallel with (don’t know the real word…) the butt of the frog (the bit that sits on the plane body, where the bolts go through).
If one foot is more worn than the other it will cause the frog to tilt, meaning you need more lateral adjuster to bring the iron back into line.
I’ve seen a YT video where the guy made a jig to help re-square the frog. If I can find it I will post it here.
Cheers
Darren.
