I have been looking for a basic plow plane on Ebay USA, especially a Record. I have a Stanley 45 and I detest using it. No slight on the Stanley, its just not my cup of tea. Records are hard to come by in the US for sure ( at a decent price). I have seen a few on Ebay UK however. Has anyone ordered an overseas Ebay purchase? Was at a good experience? Does anyone have any advice for buying overseas?
Thank you for your guidance and advice
29 April 2019 at 10:14 pm #557484I have ordered from the U.K. a few times with good success and no outright failures. I’m usually pretty careful about what I’m getting and ask questions. ( no cracks in the castings? Etc)
The one Record 043 plough I ordered in the last year I got for $35 in really good condition with 3 virtually new cutters. The only thing was that the original thumbscrews for the fence were replaced with non OEM screws, but that was evident in the photos ( they are common 10-24 size). And it only had the long rods, but making short rods from drill rod was a snap. So I got what I thought I was getting for a good price – with one exception.
What originally attracted me to the buy was that the seller advertised free postage, and that included to the USA. Many times you pay more for postage than for the tool to get stuff shipped here.
But the package came postage due, ( no return address, so it wasn’t an accident) and when I wrote the seller I got no response. Fortunately, the postage from Leicester was only $7.25. ( makes you wonder what the rest of the sellers do with all the extra) so I just figured it was still an OK deal and just dropped it. I feel relatively confident that if I pursued the issue with PayPal I would have gotten a refund. You might want to comfirm the shipping charges by email before you authorize payment.
Hope that helps.

I have bought a Rapier 043 over ebay.uk some time ago. It’s a copy of the Record version, and from what I gathered before buying it was decent enough. I guess my advice is to make sure the accessories are complete for what you need (cutters, thumbscrews, shoe, rods, etc), mine only has two cutters and while it’s good enough to make a groove for box or drawer bottoms, I wish it came with the narrower cutters to make a snug fit to thinner plywoods. It’s no big issue though and there are workarounds. Eventually the condition of the plane is what sealed the deal, and yes being in SE Asia I do pay more for shipping from UK, but for a small item it’s not so bad.
