I have a couple of questions for the community. I recently got a set of Stanley 750 chisels. I have heard some people talk about removing the lacquer from the blades as part of the set up. Is this necessary? Seems like it would come off where needed as I sharpen and lap them.
The other question is about spray adhesive for attaching paper for lapping the backs. Does the type of adhesive matter. Wasn’t sure if some was more permanant than others and wanted to know opinions about removing it after from the granite slab I got. Or will it come off easily since the granite is non porous.
Thanks Brian. Thats what I thought about the chisels. And I asked about the adhesive because in one of his videos Paul sticks down and pulls up the paper repeatedly.
Scott, yes the spray adhesive works but lately when I’ve been doing some lapping, I’ve just been using water with the wet dry sandpaper. It works okay but sometimes the opposite side tends to curl up towards you. But I don’t have to remove the glue after I’m done. I’d say if you have a lot of lapping (an hour or more) I’d use the spray glue, if your just touching up or working on one iron I would just use water.
