Hello everyone, I’m new here
My name is Mateo and I’m from Spain.
I’ve been following the masterclasses since the wallclock project. Last christmast I bought some tools from ebay and brought them back to working order.
I love bushcraft, camping and knives so I started as a green woodworker and then gone into whittling with a pocket knife but then I found Paul Seller looking for a DIY workbench on youtube.I’m making right now a table for my kitchen with a LOT of mistakes, but not so bad for my first project thanks to paul’s teaching skills.
the frame of the table is in inches something like 67″ long , 31″ wide
the rails are 7/8″ stock. So, Do you think I need a stretcher with a housing dado in the middle of the rail or It’s plenty strong as It is.
I’ll try to post some photos of the dry run.
Thank you very much
Mateo

It’s affordable and at least is square and easier to make parallel after ripping.
Anybody on the stretcher thing??17 April 2014 at 9:45 pm #56218This depends on a couple of things. What size are the leg sections and what joints have you used. I assume M&T and if so, what length are the tenons. usually we place the mortise holes off centre to maximise the length of the tenon. Going too near to the outer face of the leg will weaken the outer edge of the leg. Generally the legs of dining or working tables are around 3″ minimum and 4″ max. Not hard and fast. This means you can keep the mortise further away from the outer edge. 1/2″ is a good thickness.
If the table has well proportioned legs thicker tenons and the rightly positioned mortises, the table will be fine without a stretcher.Hey Paul, thank you very much for answering.
the legs are 67×67 mm and I used mortise and tenon joinery with 30mm long 16mm thick and 125mm tall tenon. the rails are 150mm wide and 27mm thick.
I left a 20mm wall to the edge of the leg. I’ve tried to make the essential frame the same as your coffee table but a little upscale, and with design details fitting the customer’s(my wife) demands.
Here is the table almost finished. I had to rush a little because I was being a father (which I am now :D).

Welcome Mateo. It looks like Paul answered you question. The table looks great. And congratulations on being a father. Just think, learning this skill will give you something to share with them and pass along.
Be sure and post pictures of the table when you finish and post pictures of the new addition to you family in the off topic section. I look forward to see all of them… 🙂
