Tagged: Pigsticker Mortice Chisel Bend
Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a 1/2″ Ward ‘pigsticker’ Mortice Chisel off eBay. I’ve noticed that the blade has a slight bend in the blade down its back side, as though someone has been a bit over exuberant in waste removal! This bend was not mentioned in the description. I’ve tried to upload a picture but it’s not working for me. I was just wondering if this bend would present a problem in use as it’s only the sides that have to register in the mortice?
Thanks.
You might be able straighten it out in the vice, or using a block of wood at each end and a clamp at the bend point to gradually pull it back into shape. I’ve done that with an old bevel-edge chisel and with a Groves backsaw, but not tried it on a mortice chisel.
Maybe you could return it as Ed says but a lot of Ebay sellers say that “what you see is what you get” so they might refuse to refund even if their photos might have omitted to show the damage.
Thanks for your responses. The seller apologised and eBay have processed a full refund without needing to return the item. I have a customer who is a master blacksmith so I may ask him if he could straighten and re-temper it for me, I’m sure it’ll be a doddle for him to do.
