Hi.
I’ve just got a Record 044C plough plane off eBay. It was a very good price but it only came with bead cutters. Does anybody know if any other blades will fit it?Thanks
7 December 2017 at 1:57 am #395827You can still buy new straight cutters.
Replacement Plough Plane Blades – 044
And , of course, eBay.
You can also make cutters if you are up to the task. Just get some 1/8″ tool steel and follow the process Paul describes in the “Making a Wooden Spokeshave” video. It’s quite satisfying–I made a slightly>3/16″ cutter for my plough this way when I did not have one. I used it when making my first chessboard. Pretty cool to be able to make a cutter exactly the right size, just when I needed it. Pretty simple too. Plus it is brand new steel/blade as opposed to some vintage set I might find on ebay meaning no pitting/restoring necessary–just virgin steel turning into a user tool.

7 December 2017 at 11:18 am #396104Hi Larry.
Thanks for the info but, those are just for the 044, they are not compatible with the 044C. I appreciate your help though.
Hi David.
If I can’t get what I need I may have to make one. Thanks for the help.
8 December 2017 at 12:37 am #396568Hi Larry.
Thanks for the info but, those are just for the 044, they are not compatible with the 044C. I appreciate your help though.
Hmm…
I see the cutters are different. My bad.But they look an awful lot like the cutter for a Stanley 45 or a Record 405.
I suggest you buy the cheapest one you can find on eBay and see if it fits.
My stanley 45 cutters fit a record 405 and clones from Craftsman and unión tools. The side notch is pretty standard.
If any of those fit, the Veritas cutters for their plough or combination planes will also fit. Before I wrote, I looked at the Veritas cutters and rejected them because they didn’t have the grooves of the 044.
Write to Veritas. They designed their plough after an 044 plane. I’m sure they have been asked before and will know about compatibility. Several Stanley tools I fit Veritas cutters, including the 45 and my router.

You might gain a tongue cutter out of the search.

9 December 2017 at 6:47 pm #398038Thanks again for the info Larry.
I’ve emailed Axminster to see if they can give me a dimension for the Veritas cutters, i’m just waiting to hear back.
Thanks again.

9 December 2017 at 11:36 pm #398212For further verification. I have a Stanley 45 and an old 50,and the cutters are 1/8” thick within a couple thousandths. I can use them interchangeably except that the 50 cutters have no notch and I have to set them By hand.( they are 74 mm long)
I also acquired a Craftsman 45 set of cutters, and they are complete clones of the Stanleys. (Crafstman apparently had 45’s made by both Stanley and Sargent). If you look at the Veritas info on the new combination plane, they say that Stanley 45 cutters fit, and that the Small plough plane cutters will also. The small plough cutters are shorter. I do recall somebody wrote years ago to Veritas and they said their cutters would work in a 45 but cautioned they were shorter, so they would sharpen fewer times.
I measured my Stanley grooving cutters and they are all within a mm of 94 mm and the notch is 90-92 mm from the sharp edge.
My tongue cutter is a mm longer.
So to fit Stanley cutters, your adjuster will have to open that far, or you will have to grind another notch and maybe shorten the cutter. The Veritas small cutters are shorter by just about a cm, according to a fellow on this site
http://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/accessory-blades-for-the-veritas-small-plow-t61384.html
Another fellow states his Record 050 cutters ( not 050C) are 74 mm long. They have a notch.
So if your adjuster will open to the 80-83 range to the notch, you should be fine for Veritas Small plough cutters. Measure the iron you have.
The Veritas Small plough cutters are A2 steel. The larger and longer combo plane cutters are PMV-11.
I have made a couple 45 cutters from 1/8” O1 precisión ground steel and ground my own notches with a Dremel and cut off wheel.
And of course, if you find Record 045c or 050c cutters, they will fit.

12 March 2018 at 5:57 am #495395Paul, did you end up with cutters that fit your 044C? I’m in the same position, having assumed (without checking) that 044 cutters would fit the 044C. Gary
12 March 2018 at 8:54 am #495436Hi Gary.
In the end I just made my own. I got a length of 1/8″ tool steel from RS Compinents. I shaped them, hardened them with a pound shop disposable barbecue and then quenched them in peanut oil.
For a couple of hours work, I got a set from 3mm to 13mm in 1mm increments for under £10. That should cover everything I need I think.FYI, Axminster emailed me back and it looks like cutters for the Veritas plane will fit just fine.
