Hi Darren,
yes I got your videos. I have carefully watched them and compared to mine and do not see any difference. It confirmed I put the vice together in the right way, visually there does not seem to be any difference in the spring tension.
What I have noticed when inspecting the screw when I run finger along the thread if feel “sharper” for the touch towards the far end of the screw. I will try to measure the wear with a feeler gauge when i get back from work.
Hi,
Here’s two videos: one of a 52 1/2 that I just restored and is sitting on my bench (1940s model), and the one I have actually fitted to my bench, a 1930s model.
How does this compare to yours?

Darren.
It was the thread. I bought a replacement screw of ebay. The knob and handle was in rather bad condition with deep pitting. However, the thread was covered with heavy grease and cleaned up quite well.
The half nut does not jump away of the screw in any position. A great improvement. I guess the original screw must have had very busy life and spent most if its life in the first 4″.
The vice now works as it should. Esthetically though it us far from what I would be happy with. Need to use some more elbow grease on polishing the handle and the knob.
Just wondering, what do you guys use on the thread? A grease or an oil?
