Wrought nails, most likely.
Peter Follansbee used to make a lot of reproduction American vernacular style 17th Century furniture with nails.
His web site/blog is now mainly concerned with his current commercial activities, but if you go back a few years, you should find details of some of the techniques he used when he was engaged in making furniture.
