It would have been nice to have 1 1/2″ gouge scoop and for doing bigger shaping jobs.
I would think you can just use just one part of the gouge for smaller sections to be removed.
In the end would be nice to have a selection of gouges but that can be very costly indeed when you consider you can get gouges from 1/4″ to 2″ in 11 sweeps.18 May 2014 at 9:10 pm #57218I thought it might work well to leave the scoop connected to the the longer piece of wood as it would make holding it easier , All worked well until I put a bit too much weight on sanding the bowl , it cracked were the scoop was still connected. I have put super glue into the crack and clamped up in the vice. I think I will only know how successful it has been when I come to try separating

I will give it go in some maple and cherry when I come across some that will work out.
21 May 2014 at 12:04 pm #57319You sure do have a nice selection of timbers.
Walnut, cherry, maple, and mahogany are my favourites.21 May 2014 at 2:41 pm #57328Mark, I am lucky to live about 10 miles away from one of the largest hardwood retailer in Florida http://www.hardwoodlumberandmillwork.com/hlm3335_002.htm. They have a great selection and very friendly. I go buy wood from them sometimes weekly. I buy it all rough sawn so the cost is less than milled boards.
I would add white oak to your favorite four to round out my top 5.
22 May 2014 at 2:27 am #57390Dan, I feel your pain! I have not split a scoop but I have split a least 3 spoons. I also took a finish spoon that I thought the bowl should be a little deep and gouged right through the bottom.
Oh the growing pains we all have. LOL
