For those of us unable to afford or access a hand router, post a pic of your poor man’s router in this thread.
This is my Not So Poor Man’s Router Cheaters Edition using a 1/2″ Veritas straight router plane blade. Fits nice and snug in a 10mm hole. Just in pine to see how it would turn out. First thing I ever made and never thought I would make a working tool π

25 July 2018 at 2:54 pm #549595This router works just as good as a Stanley??
Rise and fall by bolt set between two layers of oak
Cutter from Alan key
Cutter has a groove cut with grinder
Large washer and nut with araldite adhesive
Cutter retained by 5mm eye bolt
Eye bolt retaining knob by forcing (in a vice) a nut….into a knob from ‘bits a bobs’ box
ALL DESIGNS FOUND ON UTUBE
Other fixed router from handrail offcut…using vintage 1/2″ firmer chisel and wedge
I use a home made wooden mallet to tap down iron and wedge. When groove complete use wedge set beside iron and tap up iron wedge….iron pops out easy

Nice work. Did you do any kind of hardening to the Allen key?I built very poor man’s router (filed the head of a Phillips screw like the screw of the Paul Sellers poor man’s marking gauge, but screwed it into the wood at an angle somewhere between 80-85Β°). That tool is now part of the “Therapeutic Arts and Crafts” workshop of a rehabilitation facility. So no photo yet, but I’ll shoot one when I will have done (grammar?) the next one – I promise!

25 July 2018 at 5:20 pm #549630Hi E.
An Allen key is hard no need to do anything to it just grind sole
KEEP IT COOL BY DIPPING JUG WATER….DO NOT LET TIP COLOUR CHANGE TO BLUE OR YOU WILL DESTROY HARDNESS.
IMPORTANT TO SHARPEN IN SUCH A WAY AS THE UNDERSIDE IS SLOPING UP AT THE REAR (rather like putting your foot to the ground with heel up)MY ROUTER HAS A 1/4″ …6mm Allen key but you could use larger.
When using tool take small shaving not heavy……I can cut perfect stopped housing joints. Look on utube for more advice
Best of luck..john31 July 2018 at 10:51 pm #549761Here is my version using a 3/8β Veritas cutting iron. I inset the screw eye and then assembled the top and bottom-hence the dowels. I may try to find a knurled brass knob to to replace the wing nut at some point.
