Does anyone know the threading on the Stanley #78 rabbet plane depth stop screw? I’m looking for a replacement, but exorbitant prices on EBay are preventing me from getting one. Is it a common threading I could find at a hardware store? I’ve seen 10-28 tossed around. Could anyone confirm?
The original was Whitworth 9/32” 24 TPI shouldered thumb screw. there are still taps and dies available if you are a stickler for original. The thread pitch was 55° instead of the UTS 60° pitch.

But #10 – 24 machine screw will work. Any well stocked USA hardware store should have that size.
It might be a little tight or loose depending on the tolerances and wear, but run it in and out a couple times and it will fit fine. I usually check from different bins. Some fit better than others ( universal thread standard isn’t what it sounds like) The same size works on the cap retainer screw. I wouldn’t use a hardened machine bolt. A cheap one is fine and won’t gum up the threads on the plane.
If you get a thumbscrew, it should be the shouldered kind, but a washer will do in a pinch
Check also in the electrical department if it’s not in the regular hardware bins. You might get lucky in the lamp parts bin for a thumbscrew.
