Hi!
I moved a few moths ago. So that gave me the opportunity to improve my new creative “garage” workspace. Then this moth I got some new projects and a dead line so I was in a hurry and with no budget (at least 150€ for the aprons, top and tool rest in 2nd choice pine).
So this was I came up. Recycling or Upcycling as our preference.
So from:
– a computer desk (from a friend) “the tool trolley”.
– a beaten construction wood “the legs” -I decided to make proper legs because later I can use them in other benches.
– a broken door, an old melaminic agglomerate closet “top and the aprons”.
– all the screws were reutelized. The cost
1 glue jar 6,50€ for the laminations
4 screws, 4 washers, 4 bolts 1,45€ for the workbenchIts far from pretty, but it works!

My previous workbench top was two layers of 3/4 inch MDF. it worked well until I foolishly left a jug of windshield anti freeze on it. The jug leaked which caused the MDF to swell. Well, I wanted a larger bench anyway. 🙂
An inexpensive upgrade would be to tack a sheet of 1/8 inch hardboard to the top. That can be replaced when it gets banged up and stained and will protect the particle board.
26 August 2014 at 7:50 pm #62977it may well be cheap and ugly but if it helps you build beautiful projects crack on i say its only no good if you dont use it
26 August 2014 at 8:39 pm #62978Flat and solid. What’s wrong with that. You can replace the top and aprons at your leisure. Looks like you did nice work on the lag assemblies by the way.
I think that the tool trolley is a great way to re-purpose that old desk.
The important thing is that it has you ready to do some woodworking. 🙂
26 August 2014 at 11:11 pm #62981Very well done! Its a Work Bench, not a show peice I built mine from cutoffs from a work sit
It looks like trash but it is solid. Imy make a better one but I would rather spend the money on good wood for projects
If you like it that is all that countsFrankj
