Hello all!
I want to ask for some help, basically to help me find the right (english) description for the type of thumbscrews I Am looking for..
When I enter a search on eBay/Amazon &Co. with “thumbscrew” “brass” “knurled head screw”, all my searches return screws of this type:
However, that is not what I am looking for. I Am actually searching for the knob-kind of thumbscrews like this:
Does anybody know how these are called specifically?
Cheers, Igor

The only differences sometimes are, the knurled ones usually have ‘knurled’ in their description, so don’t use that as a search word. Also occasionally the type you are trying to find can be called ‘wing’ thumb screws or wing bolts – even though they aren’t. More often though they are referred to as shouldered or un-shouldered thumb screws. Confusing, I know.
Anyway, this should help you: type the following into Ebay, exactly as written (copy and paste it):
thumb screws -knurled
McMaster-Carr calls them “spade head thumb screws”:

If you are in the USA you can find them in the drawers in the fasteners department at Lowes or Home Depot.
You may need one of those odd sized screws that Stanley is famous for or a metric size if your plane is made in England.

7 March 2018 at 5:29 pm #492291A Search on eBay for “Stanley thumbscrew” yields three dozen hits today, including the one Dave shows (first hit). A couple include the part the screw fits as part of the sale.
Stanley wing screw also works. If you include which tool model you want it for, it narrows down, but also weeds out bits from other tools that would fit.
Also, I have had great success contacting an eBay seller:nhplaneparts ( just type that as a search) with specific requests.the fellow makes a living supplying old parts.
Or go to https://www.facebook.com/NHplaneparts/
He even provided an adjuster lever with the correct patent dates on it at competitive pricing. These are buy it now items, not auction.
His listed offerings sometimes show up as fastandfree ( refers to shipping)
I typically get parts in 4-5 days to the opposite coast. He’s my go to guy if I’m looking for a specific part with correct markings. He also knows which parts are interchangeable from plane models.
And for full disclosure, I have no connection with the seller other than as a repeat customer.

I doubt it. Kunz tools are made in Germany (at least they used to be) so they probably take metric sized screws, even if production has shifted to Asia. Even Stanley’s American competitors usually used more common off-the-shelf sized screws while they shamelessly copied everything else on the Stanley designed tools.

8 March 2018 at 12:37 am #492686Kunz planes are metric so the #80 probably is also. But I went into my local tru value hardware store today and they have m6 and m8 thumbscrews.
And eBay has m6 and m8 thumbscews with or without shoulders.

8 March 2018 at 11:54 am #493027Thanks everybody, good feedback. Adding “shouldered” to the search helped find more matches for these types of thumb screws!
I’m not searching for a replacement on any tool or so, I want to use these types of screws for some purpose-specific planes I’m building, metric M3/M4 and up to approx. 1 inch long (2~3 cm)..
22 March 2018 at 10:18 pm #505828Hi Igor. I’m not sure if you are still looking but fastenal has alot of options. I am also not sure if they ship internationally or not but worth a check.
28 March 2018 at 3:12 pm #512152Thanks Michael.
I checked Fastenal, just for the record; their “thumbscrews” or “spade head” screws seem only available in steel or stainless steel, I could not find brass options..
