Does anyone know if the new replacement sets of plane screws from Stanley fit older models. Specifically this set offered by Axminster
http://www.axminster.co.uk/stanley-spares-kit-3-bailey-plane-screws-nuts-135718
I have a missing tote handle screw from a Record No6. The tote screws from my Stanley 4 ½, 5 1/5 and No 10 are interchangeable with the Record #6, albeit some are longer.
The description seems to indicate they would fit but I don’t know if Stanley have changed the thread or width of screws over the past 20 years?
Thanks
MartinI bought a screw kit from Stanley for a very old #8, and it fit, but Stanley seems to have changed their parts kits since that time. It took some digging when I ordered mine, but I bet if you dig through Stanley’s web pages, you will find a contact address for technical support. Send them a description of your plane (you can find identification keys online that will help you estimate the age) and ask if / where to get parts.
Hi Martin,
Jim Davey in Australia sells kits of these older Stanley parts as do others in the US so they are available. But if you are looking for Record parts then send an email to Stuart at the Tool Exchange (www.toolexchange.com.au) and ask him as he often has Record spares in stock that are not listed on his site and Stuart will send anywhere in the world. If you are in the UK, you could try http://www.OldTools.co.uk but he will only send to UK addresses or maybe ToolBazaar. Someone will have one somewhere.
Cheers

20 January 2016 at 7:48 pm #134043Thanks for all the help guys. Matt – It’s a steel screw about 3/4″ long that secures the front of the real handle on larger planes.
I’ve taken a chance on ordering the Stanley Spares kit as I saw on a forum that others had bought this and used the imperial sized parts for older planes. It will be here in a day or so, so I will post and let you know if the parts fit older planes.
Ironically I contacted a number of retailers of this spares kit and no one could give a definite answer!
Thanks again for your help,
MartinThe most likely reason your having trouble getting an answer is the thread pitch angle issue with older Record planes. The older planes have tote screws that are cut to “Whitworth” pitch. That may not be the correct name as I have seen it in a couple variations. However, the angle of the faces of the threads are different from what we commonly use now. You really need to know what you have because they are close enough to appear to thread in, but are damaging your existing threads.
4 February 2016 at 7:00 pm #134532The Stanley spares kit arrived and every threaded item was duplicated to provide metric and imperial sizes. The tote handle screw was only about 1/2″ long, not the 3/4″ length of the Record. Looking at both Stanley and Record tote handles the Record is thicker at this point, hence requiring a longer screw. However the screw did fit the thread. However as MTaylor points out it’s difficult to know whether damage to threads would occur if it was locked in place.
