So I’ve washed and used my spoons (after initial coats of terra nova oil) and the walnut ones have gone fuzzy. I thought it might be any open grain wood, as my oak one did it ay first, but I resanded/oiled (320 grit) and it seems fine. I’m wondering if perhaps the food safe paste wax would offer better protection on the walnut? I’ve got the cherry ones washed now too, see what they do. Perhaps I am too fussy about it. Maybe I need a trip to lee valley…

Wetting the wood with water causes the grain to swell a bit, this is pretty normal. It is actually called “raising the grain”. Sometimes even done intentionally before finishing with water based finishes. The good news is that it can be sanded back smooth after it dries and it typically won’t raise again.

It appears as if washing the spoons has raised the grain. now that you have sanded it back down it should not happen again. you always need to resand the grain after it raises, particularly with water soluble finishes. I think you’ll be fine now.

Tag- team response!!!!! I’ve used and washed the walnut twice, then sanded twice at 220 and 320. the oak raised once, I resanded and it appears fine. But this walnut…. oh this walnut!!!!…. Everyone likes the look of it, but I cant give it as a gift knowing that it does this. THen again, everyone could use a little extra fibre.

    hello!
when paul makes that spoon on the youtube video, finishing it using spokeshave and scraper- how about grain raising? he doesnt mention how to tackle it? can you tackle it with the “blade”? or has to be sand paper?

    But first, coffee! 😀

I’ve got some ash spatulas that did the same, just kept washing and sanding them a couple of times, now it’s stopped….

perhaps the finish you’ve put on is preventing all the fibres to raise at once….

    so basically, keep goin’ ?
