Quick background… My grandfather was a pattern maker and a lifelong woodworker and recently my mom brought me over a fruit basket he made that she didn’t really like. I love look of the thing. I have been taking some of his pieces of furniture and others and studying them to learn how he built them. This fruit basket has obviously needed repairs over the lifetime of it and I want to (while it is still here and in one piece) recreate it myself.
I have no idea if this was his own design or not and the story is that he was the one who built it (details are always kind of sketchy from my family so you never know that for sure either). Either way I can not figure out what would have been used for the curved round parts that make up the basket.
If anyone has any ideas I’d like to hear them or I could provide additional info if I have it.

Actually my initial thought was cane too but then both cane and rattan have those kind of knuckle type joints every 12″ or so and then how would you account for those flutes down the lengths? Perhaps indeed he knew someone who worked in a fluted dowel workshop?
11 December 2015 at 1:09 am #133073I’m not too sure who he knew or how he came across materials. It’s a shame that he is gone now and when I was much younger and had the chance I had little interest in what he did.
I’m not too familiar with cane I’ll look into that and see if it looks like something I could use. How might one search for cane like this and filter out cane used for chair seats? Or walking canes?
11 December 2015 at 1:09 am #133074Not that I’m an expert on cane, but you can see two or three little “knuckles” dotted around. A canny craftsman might have hidden more in the holes of that support. The “flutes” don’t look regular enough to me to be man-made.
If you wanted to replicate the form in wood, you could try steaming or soaking wooden dowelling.
