Is there a thickness limit and width limit for the legs of the workbench Paul made? I finished the legs and they seems a little thin. The length of my bench is 5 feet and the width is around 2 feet.
There isn’t really any limit. As long as they aren’t bowing and bending under the weight of the top or planing then there really isn’t much issue. In the workbench Youtube series Paul ends up with legs that are 4×4 inches. The bench there was approximately 8 feet by 3 feet. For a smaller bench like yours then you could easily cut down on the thickness of the legs.
22 May 2016 at 2:39 am #137357My Paul Sellers’ style bench was 5ft x 2ft. The legs were 3-1/2″ square and the bench was rock solid. You don’t mention what size your legs ended up being, but if your still worried, one option is to make the skirts a little wider.
22 May 2016 at 4:24 pm #137367I’m in the process of making my bench which is also 5 feet long. I’ve gone with the same size legs as Pauls 4 x 4 although now over here in the UK planed wood is just under the 4 inches and by the time I finish squaring them up and taking out the mechanical plane marks they are probably more like 3-3/4 inches.
But they don’t look out of place, in fact along with the 3inch thick top, go towards giving the bench that all important weight and rock steadiness that is needed.
Glued my mortise and tenons to make the complete H frame legs today, so tomorrow is the big day……assembly! I am so looking forward to finishing it, so I can really start honing my woodworking skills.

23 May 2016 at 2:00 am #1373702 3/4 x 3 1/2 is plenty big enough. My bench does not have aprons and my legs are about that size. It’s rock solid and doesn’t move when I’m planing etc. I think that all that matters. 🙂
