I realized this is an old thread, but in the process of looking for info about an unused set of Marples blue handled chisels that I bought back in the 80’s, that I forgot I had in storage… I found this website with great info on Marples chisels: https://williammarplesandsons.com/chisels-gouges/chisels/
It clearly shows how to identify the Pre-Irwin stuff.
27 October 2019 at 3:50 am #621908FYI the youtube video is no longer available, clicking on the above link results in a “Video unavailable – this video is private” message… too bad, I would have liked to have watched it.

27 March 2019 at 2:14 am #555670Hobby Lobby (lots of them in the Houston area) sells 1-Lb Assorted Leather Remnant Packs, consisting of a variety of thicknesses and types for about $6.
With their sale coupons, you can get a bag for around $3-4, that will not only yield pieces suitable for strops, but other workshop projects such as the woodworking vice jaw face covering, as Paul shows in episode 9 of the “How to Build a Workbench” videos.
Contents of these remnant packs vary greatly, be sure to sort through the packs on the shelf and choose one that looks to have more the leather type that will be useful.
