I have ordered and received the 12 plane set of Asian hollows and rounds from Ebay that were linked in dborn’s post above, so thought I’d share my impression of them.
The planes were delivered from China to Wisconsin, USA in less than 2 weeks, very quick. Note that the plane bodies are smaller than the vintage moulding planes we’re used to seeing. They appear to be very well made, and I see no reason that they won’t work well for the picture frames I hope to make with them.
The blades have the radius shape and bevel ground to a point that they just need to be honed/polished to be made ready to use. Now I just need to practice my honing technique to get them ready.
When I was setting up my oil-soaked rag in a can, I didn’t have mineral oil at hand. So I decided to use what I had until I could get a supply of mineral oil. The oil I had available was 30w motor oil. It does leave a small stain on the wood for the first few swipes with the plane or saw, but this is removed with subsequent passes. I’ve been using this motor oil for about 6 months on plane soles, saw plates, and chisels, and have found no reason to bother switching to the lighter mineral oil.
I haven’t used this exact vise, but it sounds like we took the same path to get to a good vise. I also tried the cheap vises (3 of them, spending a bit more each time) before I got a good one. I finally got the Rockler 9″ Quick Release Workbench Vise, so a somewhat different model than you’ve listed. The Workbench vise lists for $160, but I was able to catch it while on sale for $30 off list price.
To make a long story short, I’m delighted with the workbench model. It has been a pleasure to use compared to the other models I’ve tried. Good luck in your search!
