Mitered Dovetails, technically impressive, but takes a little from the style of the piece. It’s amazing work though and something I can aspire to.
21 July 2013 at 11:39 am #15126Yes, I just bought one at Lowes last week. I had to flatten the front of the cap, but besides that and an initial sharpening it was ready to go. The bottom is flat and the weight is solid. It is nearly identical to my dad’s old Stanley #4. For $30 I am very pleased. I’m using it to plane a computer desktop/workbench today.
19 April 2013 at 11:52 pm #11160Looks great Scott! Mine too has been called “The Coffin.” I just started to shellac it today and the process seemed to go okay. I first tested with a sponge brush and that held way too much shellac. I switched to a brush, dabbing off as much as possible and that went much better. Someone had posted some shellac instructions from a guitar maker; they recommended using a piece of wool sock wrapped in a scrap of old t-shirt as an applicator. I’ll try that next time.
Again, that’s a beautiful box.
