I buy a lot of secondhand tools and treated myself to a DMT extra course diamond plate via Amazon. It arrived on Friday and I eagerly started to put a new bevel on a Record no4 plane iron.
At first it was like lightening but after a few minutes I noticed progress was slowing. I wiped the filings and water off the plate and saw my face shining on the backing plate! No diamonds left in the centre .
Needless to say I have requested a return. Has anyone else had this or am I just unlucky.?I have been on forums for other interests and have found quite a bit of the behaviour mentioned above.Foul language is another common problem. Now I am not saying that if I hit my thumb with a hammer or get a splinter under my nail that I will say ” dash it” but swearing on a public forum is just not on.
It should be remembered that many members will not have English as a first language and that spelling in the U.K. is different to that in U.S.A. However, we are here to work wood and make things and learn from one and other. As a wise man said ” all I know is that I know absolutely nothing”

Hello Pauline, I dabble in antiques and collectables in Essex and I too have some magazines from the 1950s. I haven’t seen them fetching more than a couple of quid (£s) in antique centres however their value is way beyond the price. I should hang on to them or pass them on to someone who would appreciate them. So many things like this get tossed in the bin as toot ( garbage) by auction houses etc when they do house clearances.
If you have rust spots coming through chrome as found on lever irons, old car bumpers ( buffers) bike wheels etc. You can remove it by rubbing with coke and aluminium foil. The foil is softer than the chrome so it wont scratch. works well on discoloured chrome plastic too.
An old clock makers trick for small rusty parts is to bathe them in strong tea. Yes, really. Put parts in container, cover with water and throw in a few tea bags. Leave over night. Wash off the black sludge. The rust spots will be black and the non rusty bits will have a grey sheen. The metal will not rust unless it gets wet. Moisture in the air and from hands will not affect it.
