This episode contains a few trade tricks that will never be obvious when the desk is finished and in place. Just how did we tackle the issue of contrary grain direction? Why did we use screws in the dovetails anyway? Why did we not just bandsaw the shapes on the front edge of the shelves? This episode takes you through these issues and then walks you through working with highly figured grain to get the very best outcome as icing on the cake of making, not baking.
Enjoyed the `belt and suspenders` portion where you use a dovetail and a screw to hold the joint in place while the glue dries.
Hi Paul, thank you for sharing that idea of using a brass screw and cutting the top off and using it to allow for wood movement. However, I was wondering if just using screws with a proper step drilling (pilot/clearance hole) would be good enough to allow wood movement?
If that could work on the table-top then wouldn’t the smaller shelf be just fine with using screws directly as you have done on the long grain side o the shelf?
Thanks,
Laxmi
