Sellers Home
For those of you who have been following along for a while the first episode of the new rocking chair video will follow a pretty familiar format. However, it actually marks the start of a new way of thinking about the content of this site.
We have released bits of information here and there about the fact that we bought a house specifically to fill with handmade furniture. This is the first project that is for that house.
When we first came up with this idea we thought we would start it with a grand announcement, but–despite it taking a huge amount of planning and effort to get here–we don’t have that much to show you on day one.
A year from now we plan to have a beautifully furnished living room where everything that can practically be made from wood will have been made by my dad.
Between now and then you will see the concept slowly emerge. It isn’t a radical departure from what we have done up to now, but it will be more purposeful. Pieces will fit with each other better to make a whole, and the story will be about more than making individual pieces (though it will still be about that too). It will be about furnishing your home with handmade wooden furniture.
Bear with us, and feel free to ask lots of questions. We know the big picture of where we are going, but we are still figuring out some of the details.
The house is a video set in a way, but it is also my parent’s home. This is Sellers Home. Welcome!
Really looking forward to this. Are you not jumping in Joseph? Surely two master woodworkers is better than one, even if this one is Paul Sellers?
No Jorge, my dad and I work well together in the arrangement we currently have. While I don’t rule out the occasional appearance we are both playing to our best skills with things as they are 🙂
Very good idea 🙂 I’m sure this house will have a bed, a project that I’d be happy to see here, surely because I would like to build one 🙂
Yes Mehdi, there will be a bed! 🙂
It looks to me like you two are pretty multi-skilled 🙂
I have been looking forward to this series launching and really enjoy the idea of checking off purposeful, useful, and beautiful all in one go. Thank you. Congrats.
This is an awesome idea! And I love that you are starting with a rocking chair. I have been wanting to make one for ages.
I was also wondering if you were going to jump in. For years I struggled with consistently sharpening a card scraper and watched every online video I could find until I happened upon one you did years ago. No one else stressed the importance of using a single cut mill file and that suggestion made all the difference. I now get a perfect edge every time. Your dad’s video on card scrapers taught me how to use a palm grip for larger surfaces. Different perspectives are so helpful.
I agree with Joe about the card scraper. And that was a game changer when it comes to getting a decent surface finish.
