It’s not too often when construction-grade lumber is used to create an heirloom piece. But perhaps we need to have the same attitude as craftsmen of old did, when many vernacular pieces came from the plainest of softwoods yet lasted as a legacy for many generations to use and rely on. This is one such piece. We take the most ordinary of wood and use traditional joinery to provide a solid single bed that can be scaled up or down to suit our family’s needs. We have mortise and tenons throughout for joinery and create raised panels set in ploughed grooves. Though we use long bolts to ensure immovable solidity, we combine these with stub tenons to ensure longevity while at the same time adding perfect registration.
I’m in on this one! Toddler grandson will be the recipient.
Will there be any drawings?
Drawings are quite a bit behind – like about 11 months – they will no doubt eventually appear. Personally I don’t follow Paul’s designs as such but I do use them to get an idea of how to do things and what sizes he considers suitable for purpose. But if you plan to build something that is appearing now and you need the information now you would have to watch very carefully for the dimensions – otherwise wait until the drawings come out.
I would appreciate a cut list to get started at least
I cannot wait. I am so excited to do this. And it comes at a perfect time.
I just made a bed with bed bolts. I can’t wait to watch this to see how Paul does everything. I’m really glad you’re doing this series. It’s very rewarding to make a bed.
Thanks Paul. Looking forward to the build.
Well that was an episode chock full of technique handy hints.
