Mortising needs some strategic action, and we soon establish patterns with stamina to create accurate mortises without allowing the chisel to wander from the path we establish. Chopping large or long mortises with two straight and parallel walls can be taxing, but using this system, with the mortise guide Paul developed as a mortising aid, guarantees a positive outcome every time. Following on to lay out for the tenons in this video, Paul introduces alternative uses for the mortise guide and then, too, the router plane. Though neither of these are used traditionally as layout tools per se, they are equal to the task of dedicated tools used to this end.
Would a 3/8″ mortise work for this project? My plow plane only has a 3/8″ blade.
