The first process in shaping the coasters is accurately cutting and planing them square. Once this is done Paul introduces an ingenious method using a jig to ensure the four corners are cut and planed evenly. The final step is to create a holder for the coasters which is made by cutting some very fine mortice and tenons, then apply the finish of your choice.

This is an exacting project requiring a high level of accuracy using a number of skills and techniques we’ve developed through our online broadcasts.

The first stage of this project includes a number of useful techniques for accurately dimensioning thin stock, including the thicknessing jig. Paul then introduces a new clamping system used when laminating thin stock. Once this is glued, he scrapes the laminated piece in preparation for cutting the coasters to size.
