I bought some roasted aspen a while ago. It was cheap, local, and I liked the colour and grain, a figured it would make some nice boxes. Unfortunately it’s too soft and crumbly to do joinery with and will split if you look at it wrong. I decided to try it for picture frames.
Here is my first attempt. The inside dimensions are 22 x 16 inches, and it’s finished with a couple of coats of Tried and True varnish oil.

Looking good Peter. I’m guessing you made good use of the Veritas grooving plane upgrade to make the beads on the frame members.
I’ve never heard of roasted wood. Nor am I familiar with aspen. Is aspen normally lighter in color and the roasting darkens it?
Aspen is generally very white in colour. It’s also quite soft. It’s generally used for pulp or OSB and generally not used for lumber. The roasting caramelized the sugars in the wood and darkens it. I really like the colour of the roasted aspen.
And yes, the beads were done with the upgraded plow plane.
