All,
So, I’ve picked up a couple of the old style wooden body moulding planes recently. Among them is a rebate plane that is in surprisingly good condition. The body is made of beech and I’ve already sharpened the iron and trued the sole – works pretty well. Here’s where the blasphemy may come into play. I’ve seen Paul’s rebate plane he made with the fence on it and it got me to wonder about modifying this old plane by adding a fence. I’ve got some beech wood that I’ve milled. I paid only a couple $$’s for this plane.
Any thoughts on how to best do this? Any reasons why I should abandon this idea altogether?
Thanks ahead of time.

Going up a step in complexity is a strip of wood nailed to the left side of the plane. (I’ve seen a fair number of these, probably altered by guys who made a lot of rabbets of the same width.)

1 May 2018 at 12:08 pm #537764Thank you all for your feedback. I think what I was more asking was, if I was going to put a fence on, what would be the best method – not how can I achieve this without a fence.
I’m referring to this video here: https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/videos/making-rebate-plane/
I see that Paul has screws that are on the bottom of the fence and slots in the fence itself. I suppose that is the route I may need to look into. Thanks again
6 May 2018 at 9:52 pm #540674Easy ….I made Paul’s rebate plane then added depth stop plus width stop on to sole……the same could be very easily done by modifying a vintage rebate plane.
See from the pics of mine ….it works abso perfect. Made from scrap beech 3″x 2″ on one side you will see body width increase glued on ( note the ovalo made with a vintage wooden plane) other side shows depth stop NOTE THE ESCAPEMENT SLOT!!
The bottom and side fences have a slot for adjustment….with 11/4″ long round head screws together with flat and spring washers.
I can get superp crisp curly shavings and a very accurate square rebate. You could do all of this with a vintage rebate plane…
Hope that helps….John
Ps couldn’t resist showing off my modified vintage rebate plane…..gives accurate corner 45deg chamfers…….and my rather superb and very accurate ….height adjustable router….again scrap timber and sharpened Allen key notched to receive washer for vertical adjustment

I like what you’ve done and that is almost exactly what I had in mind for my project. I hadn’t thought about making the body wider – brilliant! I know what I’m going to do with this now.
Many Thanks,
Doug -
