lorenzojose, I was hoping harbor freight still made it so I could pick up a replacement scribe for cheap. My brother does a lot of metal work though, and he thinks help be able to make a new scribe easily. I don’t have the original ruler, but I do have one that works perfectly.
You have a couple choices. The original patent drawing shows a pencil holder tip for the scribe so it can be used as a mortise gauge along with a second pencil and the rule. (See drawing below)
It also shows the original concept was that the Oddjobs be used with a 4 fold rule.
I have also seen versions of the rule that held a pencil lead and some for a small pencil-sort of like the little pencils that came with canasta sets.
Later versions came with a scribe point and a little screwdriver tip to set the depth of the circle center point.
Both these pictures are with the original patent filing.
It’s interesting to see how the details of the tool evolved over the years.
The early model shown is the 1888 design but with only the 1887 patent date.
