Hi Gordon,
I only had 3x2s available and laminated these for the apron. When clamping up however I found they had a tendency to fail so I drilled a hole on the top of the apron at each corner which went through most of the laminations and inserted and glued a long dowel (spar from an old baby’s cot!) – that strengthened the whole apron and I have had no problems with it since,
HarryHi there Claudiu,
Just keep practicing. I had exactly the same problem. I could not saw straight so I began to go down the power tool route until I came across this site. It gave me the urge to try again. I began practicing with dovetail joints and showed me how to use a knife wall. Eventually it all came together. There will be days when it will all go wrong but just push on and they will become fewer and fewer.
Happy woodworking,
HarryHave you tried the humbrol range of enamel paints in both gloss and matt. Check out http://www.humbrol.org
Dear Nathan,
You need to make a support at the bottom of the outside jaw that will give added support to stop the racking.
You will find examples of this if you search for ‘leg vice’ images on Google to see what I mean. There is a picture that shows a support which passes through the leg of the bench – you will see there are a number of holes in it – you slip a large nail or metal rod in one of these and it will stop the vice from racking,
HarryHi there,
Can I suggest you look at an early video on YouTube titled Making a Wooden Cutting Board by Paul Sellers.
There he shows that you can make things without a bench and make them well.
While a workbench may be preferred it is good to remember it is not, at least to begin with, essential,
