Wow, those look amazing, really beautiful! Any suggestions as to what to use for substrate? I could easily make panels from solid wood, do you think this might be the way to go? I feel I don’t want to use fabricated panels like chip-board, OSB or the likes.
19 January 2018 at 9:22 am #442949Yeah, I also ordered a cheap diamond plate from China (free shipping!) that looks kinda like this here: double sided diamond sharpening plate and I’m perfectly happy with how it performs.
Now I know that it won’t last forever, but I have yet to see it get worn out, so I’m satisfied with what I got. I just have to flip it, but that’s a decision I made.

18 January 2018 at 10:48 pm #442650Since @sojansson mentioned the ink liners, I thought I might throw in a link to a video that I remembered seeing some time ago: ink liner by Mr. Chickadee
As to your initial question: sure, why not use your hand plane. It’ll get the job done eventually!

18 January 2018 at 4:30 am #441929Relieving the wood of the stress sounds like an interesting idea to me, thank you! I hadn’t thought about that yet, I might just as well do it and see if it helps. Anyways, there indeed IS quite a bit of twist-free or only minimally twisted wood.
Really looking forward to working with it…5 October 2017 at 6:47 pm #329268I know I’m late, but I was searching for the same chisel set as well last week. Found it by sheer luck at Aldi Suisse (Switzerland) and was lucky enough to have someone there who was able tp pick it up and bring it here. The price was at 9.99 CHF. I’m happy with it, really. I’ve only sharpened 2 so far, but it was just as Paul describes: they’re easy enough to sharpen, hold a good edge and work just fine!
5 May 2017 at 10:29 am #311733I totally hear you! My solution to this was this: good enough is good enough – for me!
To make a decision on how to deal with the frustration I asked myself: what is my want/need with this project?
I WANTED a saw that looks perfect. I NEEDED one that makes smooth, straight cuts.
Opting for my need, what cane out was a butt-ugly, crude saw with skewed angles and so on.
BUT it cuts just fine, even my 9 year old had fun using it, despite this being the first time he used a hand saw like this!So my only real need was a frame with two fulcrum points to put a blade under enough tension to saw straight…
Have fun and figure out your needs!
Ben
