Hey Darryl. Hope you’re enjoying the bench build. I’m in the process of building my second bench. It’s almsot done. As a side note to others comments I would make sure your top material is acclimatized to your shop before gluing up. I didn’t wait long enough on my second bench. The tops after cross cutting have end checked pretty badly.
The first bench I built I used old 2x material I had for a few years and that top is perfect no checks or cracks after two years. Our weather in Canada has really changed in the past couple weeks too which has made my problem worse.Good luck
Ryan
Thanks for the info Matt. It’s funny, as you probably writing that reply I was watching the bookshelf series.
I think I’ll probably go with the frame and panels glued and screwed together, I got an email from the guys stating that this was how pauls cabinets are put together. Very economical and fast. Which is what I’m after.Ryan.
This project looks great. Cudos.
So Im going to be starting a similar project, making a frame and panel tool cupboard similar to the ones paul uses.
I’m clear on everything except one thing. What is the best way to put the bottom and shelves into a cabinet like that. I was going to cut dados in the end panels to accept the bottom and shelf.
Should I also cut a dado in the back of the front rail to accept the panels as well? This will be used for tools so weight is a concern.
I want these cabinets to be very similar to Paul’s, I’m just not sure how he attaches the bottom and shelves. Thanks so much for sharing your projectRyan
Thanks for the info guys. Every little bit helps. I most definitely post some pictures of the shop in the fall when I get it ready. I Really am blessed to have this sort of opportunity, the property has been in my family name for well over 100 years. There is a beautiful window that looks out over the southern ontsrio corn and hay fields, this is were my Bench will be set up.
Thanks again.
Thanks Matt, that link is the only information I have found as well, which was helpful.
I was hoping to get an answer that this topic has been discussed with Paul at some point through the projects. I think I’ll just have to watch the “occasional table” again, as I think there is a lot of information concerning this issue of wood movement and breadboard ends. Thanks for all the replys. Definitely helpful in knowing that I’m not the only one that has struggled with this sort of issue. My main concern, as posted above is muscle memory. I’m still going to use the plane as is and report back to the functionality of it.
It’s funny, as I was checking the sole for square against the wings of the plane, I noticed one side is square to the sole and the other is not. I’m guessing this plane had some sort of twist to it from the start.
And yes it did take considerable work to get it to this point of being flat.
I’m keeping my eyes open for another No.4.
It is such a learning process to fettle these tool properly. An art in itself. Thanks again guys.
