Understood, guess £15 isn’t too unreasonable for tool steel that is easier to sharpen. Time to invest!
Edit: they’re on backorder for 4 weeks! Veritas can’t keep up with the demand that probably follows so many sales on ebay of compatible routers.

20 January 2018 at 5:00 pm #445928So having used the 71 a while, it’s handy can’t deny it does a good job at what it’s designed to do.
That being said, short of a new set of veritas cutters, I’m struggling to find a 1/4 inch straight and 1/2 inch diamond shaped cutter. The flat 1/2 inch is good for most work just wondering if anyone had a source of cutters.
18 January 2018 at 10:09 pm #442628Interesting, was leaning on the 60 now I’ve got many versions to contend with mhmm.
Thanks for the input!
18 January 2018 at 9:00 pm #442559Okay so I’ve managed to use it today for a bit of a test on some ply I had laying around, works great after I spent an hour sqauring off the blade – took about a dozen checks putting the blade gently into the wood to ensure it was interfacing evenly.
Next question though!
If you had to have one block plane, No 60 or 9 1/2? Pros and cons to each would be nice. Understandably in a perfect world you get all the tools but since a block plane is the last missing bit in my set just wondering which one is wroth looking for first.
Thanks all.
16 January 2018 at 6:57 pm #440383Thanks for the information, I’ll make a hardwood sole for it and forget about it! I did figure the depth gauge obscures vision quite a lot so just flipping it around for open cutting sounds fine.
15 January 2018 at 2:38 pm #439296Update: Ended up buying the humbrol as valspar didn’t seemingly want to sell me any paint, customer services only want to deal with trade customers or bigger orders and since B&Q stopped stocking it, that’s basically put it out of reach for restoration touch up jobs.
The humbrol isn’t a perfect match but it’s within tolerances of Records various shades used over the years, it’s a smidgen lighter than their darkest older tools and it’s darker than the more modern 80s onwards stuff.
15 January 2018 at 2:34 pm #439290Ended up getting a 71 for £55 so can’t complain, though I do have a question – people claim the depth stop ends up getting lost or not used so it’s not a major issue but it seems my plane doesn’t even include the threaded hole for mounting one!
Anyone have any information on this?

If not, the £3-4 50ml humbrol enamel amazon sells will get given a go.

9 January 2018 at 12:08 pm #431562Thinking midnight blue 15 gloss is the closest match to roundel blue. Guess it it’s not a major problem to be too far off, but if you’re refurbishing 3 tools it’d be nice to get something close to authentic for resell value if need be.
9 January 2018 at 10:20 am #431520Went to B&Q today and found out they’ve stopped selling valspar enamel and now only do rustoleum tester pots. None of the colours on offer were remotely close to record blue/roundel blue.
Shame really,2 January 2018 at 11:19 am #426120Yeah I’ve had the same issue trying to find a routerplane, it doesn’t necessarily need to be prestine but when the options are a spares and repairs buy for next to nothing then trawling around for the missing parts or spending £100+ for a full set it rapidly becomes easier to justify a Veritas/Lee Neilsen router plane…
Surprised there isn’t enough demand there’s a modern £30-50 replacement, even if it’s not as good as the vintage Record/Stanley 071s.
