“The penalty for inaccuracy is more work.”
I have this displayed over my bench, and find myself learning the lesson repeatedly 🙂
22 May 2014 at 7:33 pm #57424When I tried to change my payment form, they said they don’t have an automatic way to to it. So basically, they make you a free member again, then you sign back up with your new info.
23 January 2014 at 12:02 am #26412Excellent! I look forward to seeing the box in different dimensions.
19 January 2014 at 12:58 am #26174Thanks again for the kind words, gang. High praise indeed, coming from this group. I was a little hesitant on the color, but am very happy with how it turned out, and glad I didn’t go the more drab route. I’m just a little bummed that all those dovetails are forever hidden 🙂
David- I just used some Glidden interior latex paint from Home Depot – “Red Delicious” in satin finish. The shine comes from the top coat of shellac and wax.
8 January 2014 at 10:38 pm #25544Thanks for the kind words, gents. The work I see everyone post here on the forum has been a great inspiration to just start making stuff. You only get better by practicing.
Jason- Yes, I definitely lost a little clearance with my corrections, but that 1/8th was not enough to make the planes fit. My stock was 1×12, so I only had 11-1/2″ to start with. Had I had the full 12″, it would have been closer, but I think I’d have to make the big drawer smaller to really have enough room for the planes in the top compartment. I have seen Paul post pictures of a narrower, taller version of the chest.
Here it is.Obviously, any of the projects here can be modified to suit, but I just didn’t factor in the height of the planes before I put this one together. Next time 🙂
21 July 2013 at 9:07 pm #15135I think it also depends on what wood you are using and whether you plan to paint the chest. From all the photos I’ve seen, and looking at Paul’s chests in the workshop in NY, the student boxes, and all the painted pine boxes have the tails on the sides. Any of the hardwood versions where you can see the wood grain have the tails on the front (& back)
21 April 2013 at 1:42 am #11191Add another Paul Sellers-inspired workbench to the rolls. Finally finished mine after about a month’s work, and it is a joy to use. Now I’m on to the other projects from Paul’s book, then to the Master Class projects. Thanks so much Paul for putting your knowledge out in a format that so many of us can learn from. And thanks to all of you folks for the constant inspiration that really shows what can come from following through on Paul’s lessons.
