George,
This helps greatly -Thank you for the detailed explanation.

22 January 2013 at 5:49 pm #6788Scott, you are correct – I spoke to the guy who makes the USA made Universal clamps. He had the original patent and design – when it expired, the imports and copies came out. On these original ones, its high quality aluminum used and you don’t need a stick in the frame as you mentioned. They do cost about 30% more than the imports but well worth it – I looked at the Harbor Freight ones when I compared the two.
I bought eight of the Dubuque “Universal Clamp” aluminum clamps a while back from a retired woodworker for about 50% retail. I highly recommend these, and I do not think they require extra bolstering with a wood insert. The thickness of the aluminum is quite substantial. I like the they were made in the USA and designed by an aerospace engineer. They may be the original aluminum clamps before all the imported versions became common. I also have a number of Jorgensen Cabinetmaker clamps (the orange parallel clamps) when they were on sale once for $20 each, and I must say that they are very heavy and clumsy compared to the aluminum clamps. I reach for the aluminum clamps almost all the time for typical projects. I only use the parallel clamps for the more heavy duty jobs like benchtop laminations. I also have a few light duty Bessey parallel clamps, which are a good compromise between clamping pressure and weight.
18 January 2013 at 9:26 pm #6673Fantastic benches everyone! Once I get this big project at my day job finished, I am off to get one of these suckers built. I have a 10″ Jorgenson quick release vise ready to go along with the lumber.
I saw Paul’s version at the Baltimore, MD woodworking show and couldn’t believe how sturdy and solid this bench was! Can’t wait…
18 January 2013 at 5:35 pm #6664
Hey juryaan, A while ago Clifton had a quality problem which was more down to the foundry than anything else. Give a company a bad rep and It sticks. Some say the quality even today is hit and miss, more so than other companies. From what I have read even Lie Nielsen have been sending some less than great planes out lately. At the end of the day, It all comes down to personal choice buddy
Hi Ken, I agree with you regarding quality on some tools are hit or miss, but have never heard of Lie-Nielsen and also Veritas having any quality problems beyond a rarity which will always happen in this world (nothing is perfect) – as a matter of fact, their tolerances and quality are sometimes considered overkill. I am curious where you read this – I have never heard of such a thing and live in the US where they are based out of.
I have a mix of planes – vintage, Veritas, and Lie-Nielsen
