The scrub plane shaved about an hours worth of work. Pun intended lol. I didn’t even have to sharpen up the whole hour. Now my I have to make room in the tool box for this indispensable tool, where have you been all my life lol. It has a 5″ camber for anyone who wants to know
1 February 2017 at 3:05 pm #308887This is why I modified the design to a single drawer, to make the top deeper. Not sure of an astheticly pleasing way to deepen it, but have you thought about storing your planes with the irons removed, so that they aren’t as tall?
31 January 2017 at 11:19 pm #308873OK, scrub planes are the way to go for sure, just converted my cheapo plane and gave it a go on a scrap peice. I shall name it “the termite” haha. This thing chews up shavings quick and in a hurry! I too have a daughter, and I am trying my best to turn her into a daddy’s girl lol. I do need an apprentice down the road, then I wouldn’t be carrying on about planing up a bench top lol
31 January 2017 at 9:05 pm #308871I do have a hard time staying focused, I’ve had to resort to making a to do list to keep me on track hahaha. I’m a new dad and I don’t have as much time as I used too for my woodworking. But I’ve gotten alot of projects done thanks to my list. Now I have winding sticks, restored an old saw, and finished the restoration of one of the planes I’ve gotten from my grandpa. I have a cheap plane from harbour freight, wondering if it would be worth the time to convert it to a scrub plane before I continue the tops?
30 January 2017 at 2:36 pm #308838Started the legs today, I needed a break from planing and gluing up laminations! I’m using 4×4 posts, this time I am sawing the round overs off. Three rip cuts later and I’m ready to get back to planing my lamination haha! Each cut is taking about 20 minutes. Paul’s right, this is donkeys work lol.

I am in a hurry to laminate the tops before my straight lumber turns into something that resembles a bannana lol. I don’t trust the lumber from home depot one bit for this application, alot of it feels a bit wet still. Has anybody ever looked at buying a pre laminated beam “glulam” for this,a 3 1/2 ×13× 20′ beam runs about 200 bucks where I live. Anyways, I did get a chance to put great Grandpa’s old plane through its paces after I tuned it up and made a new tote. I restored it last year but it needed some additional love to bring it up to its former glory

I had two boards of cherry stacked against the wall, I used one to make the stool and I noticed today I can see the outline of it on the remaining board. I’m really excited to see the project darken now.
12 July 2016 at 5:02 am #138447It’s pine with a cherry stain, now I know that real cherry is roughly the same price where I live no more pine for me. Thanks for the compliments
11 January 2016 at 11:10 pm #133825Thank you, now just gotta prepare some stock for the sliding lid box.
