When the drawers are dovetailed, we need drawer bottoms. Paul’s method was commonly used by the ancients of woodworking to maximise the strength on these bottom edges, which increased the longevity of the work too. Don’t be surprised with his due diligence to make sure everything sits well before any glue is applied. In this case, Paul fitted all of the dovetails and had a dry-run and then fitted the groove strips and glued them in place, following a procedure that guarantees alignment for subsequent grooving and fitting of the drawer bottoms. You will catch a few trade secrets of drawer-making when you follow this episode.
AWESOME!!! Yeah
Nice guitar work too.
Just like magic, I am in awe.
Thanks Paul. Every video I try and find something new that I learned (in actuality, I’ve done this for 25 years for every training class work has sent me to as helps me keep focused). What I saw in this video I don’t recall you doing before was to essentially glue in the drawer slips in place before ploughing the groove in them. As you were gluing them in before putting the groove, all kinds of lights went off in my head for all the reasons you then mentioned. Great tip.
I also like using a clamp if there is a bow prior to gluing in the underside glue blocks. Will keep that in mind as well.
