It will surprise you to know that the side rails are made up of three two-bys on each side, and when made with the joinery Paul devised for connecting, they are undeniably solid and rack-resistant. First, we true up the two-bys and laminate them to gain the width of 9″ we need per rail. After planing and sanding level, we form stub tenons to fit the wide mortises. We chop and then, using a bolt through each joint, we pull the whole of the bed frame together to provide the integrity we need for a truly solid unit.
Beautiful work, Paul!
I’m going to quit undercutting my shoulders. Thanks for explaining why it’s bad in detail.
Does anyone know whether there is anything special about the bolt Paul is using here? Is it actually designed for bed construction?
